Outcomes of Operative Treatment of Forearm Deformity in Children with Osteogenesis Imperfecta: 18 Cases

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) often results in recurrent fractures and/or progressive bowing of the long bones, including arms. Upper extremity deformity has been shown to negatively impact function. The objective this retrospective case series is assess ability correct deformity, improve function and evaluate complications revision rates our patients with OI who have undergone forearm correction. A study, approved by University Nebraska Medical Center Institutional Review Board, was conducted underwent osteotomy fixation one or both bones between December 2011 August 2018. There were no exclusion criteria. electronic medical records reviewed for patient demographics, surgical details, revisions complications. total 48 procedures on 27 forearms 18 performed during study. Surgery children that interfering Half had surgery half forearms. majority Type III OI. multiple complications, most common being wire migration which required either replacement advancement wire. In conclusion, possible, good healing osteotomies fractures, although many may require interventions.
